OnDisplay Think Big with the Premiere of Their “Soothe” Music Video
Although new to the scene, South African duo OnDisplay operate as a well oiled machine with the premiere of their “Soothe” music video.
Music videos are often afterthoughts to the music, but not on this occasion for OnDisplay. Today, the duo unveiled their rousing, elaborate, expansive new video for “Soothe.” The clip is a throwback to when artists put a lot more effort into videos. It features them throwing it down in a scenic and, at times, “fiery” desert location.
And the context of the video is very much in line with the overall meaning and importance of the song. “Soothe” is an honest, passionate examination of personal struggles with mental health and substance abuse issues. The song and the video act as a guide to listeners through the complex, often discouraging journey of overcoming hurdles and embracing self-discovery.
Discussing in detail the origins and approach to the video, the duo tells us:
“We were ecstatic about the ‘Soothe’ video. Filming it was incredibly rewarding as the concept took shape during the songwriting process, making it genuinely special for us. The breathtaking location, a salt pan in Dealesville, South Africa, enhanced the experience, thanks to our gracious hosts who went above and beyond to accommodate us.
“It marked our inaugural ‘official’ music video for OnDisplay, playing a crucial role in defining our identity and content direction. The concept was born from discussions during the song’s recording, exploring the gravity of mental illness and the complex journey individuals undertake, often feeling lost and isolated. We depicted the struggle and search for a therapy, which could yield positive or, in many cases, negative outcomes. Music emerged as our savior in times of despair.”
They conclude by stating:
“A heartfelt thank you to V13 for the opportunity and unwavering support. We deeply appreciate it and eagerly anticipate premiering the ‘Soothe’ music video with you.”
OnDisplay is composed of singer and guitarist Ryan Kopman and drummer Greg Groothedde. You may refer to their music as electro-metalcore, with their sound more dynamic than your average metalcore act. They are a fairly well-oiled machine for an act that really just got things going very recently. OnDisplay’s debut track, “Stuck,” was released in October, with “Soothe” acting as the follow-up.
Neither of them are new to the rock scene, having played with several different bands in the past. Fortunately, they have banded together, and their musical identities aligned and well-developed thanks to their past adventures. They have set out to captivate audiences by attaching meaningful messages to their songs, a noble mission for an accomplished duo.
