There comes a time for many artists, like Félix Tellier Pouliot, when they are ready to stand on their own two feet. That time has come for the Canadian guitarist and composer, with the debut of his new “Upsy Daisy” video.

A broad, ambitious instrumental piece, the song is accompanied by a colourful, futuristic video clip. It’s the first sound sample you’ll hear from Pouliot’s debut solo record, Hometown Zero. Scheduled for release on January 26th, the album features Pouliot in close collaboration with bassist Christian Bailet and drummer Martin Auguste. It’s the culmination of nearly a decade of collaboration between the three musicians.

Commenting on his new single and video, Félix shares:

“This song was a fun challenge to record. Like most of the album, it’s recorded live of the floor. I was trying to get into some Allan Holdsworth-like guitar sounds and the overall dynamic of the song turned out great. I’m always trying to tell a story, which can be a bit tricky with instrumental music, but this song has something to tell so that’s why I decided to make a music video for it!”

Pouliot spearheaded the writing and recording of Hometown Zero, but Bailet and Auguste also found ways of getting involved. Five of the songs are original compositions by Pouliot himself. Bailet contributed two himself, all encapsulating the sound and chemistry developed over the years by these three masterful musicians.

Despite his longevity, Pouliot is still an up-and-coming guitarist in and around Montreal. Hometown Zero is his proper debut as a leader. His control of the guitar is so impressive now that he can do things with it that most of his peers could only dream of.  Much of the songwriting on the album was off the cuff. They allowed themselves a lot of leeway to improvise in the studio. As an experimental jazz-focused album, Pouliot has really found his calling. He is an artist able to and interested in trying new musical things others wouldn’t dare.
