The War on Drugs live in Halifax by Graham Finney Photography

June 21st, 2023, the Summer Solstice. The longest day of the year in the UK, and as the hazy sun sets down behind the wonderful Piece Hall in Halifax, it’s almost fitting that this packed outdoor courtyard celebrates in the company of ‘cosmic Americana’ band The War on Drugs.

The Philadelphia band is wrapping up a short UK run of dates before heading off to Dublin and then mainland Europe and are joined for the celebration by Los Angeles indie rock band Warpaint who is first to acknowledge the relevance of the date during their set and are almost the perfect warm-up to lead this chilled-out crowd through the early part of this balmy summer evening in Yorkshire.

While the energy levels don’t increase too much by the time the Philadelphia favourites take to the stage, it’s hard to ignore the fact that this audience is completely mesmerized by the sounds woven by this truly wonderful collective.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
