Free Whenever – “Camino” [Song Review]
At once chill and deliciously allusive, Free Whenever’s “Camino” (Rockasaurus Records) summons up vague suggestions of Dick Dale amalgamated with feline surfaces.
Brooklyn, New York-based stoner/psych-rock outfit Free Whenever recently dropped a new single, “Camino,” a track from their forthcoming EP, The Movement, set to release May 16.
Made up of Neil Guleria and Trevor LaVecchia, the two chanced upon each other at a wedding a few years back. Since that fateful meeting, Free Whenever has released a series of singles and three albums, including Jam Junkies, Vol. 1, Open Air, and Jam Junkies, Vol. 2.
Talking about the song, LaVecchia shares, “It signifies the path forward. To keep evolving and traveling, energetic for the future and what it may bring. ‘Camino’ is a road whose end ultimately is up to you.”
Almost trickling, “Camino” rolls out on laidback percussion, followed by surf-rock tinted guitars giving off dreamy, almost lysergic tones. The tune’s shuffling momentum conveys a stripped-down expectancy as it strolls here and there, exploring various avenues of space and colour.
At once chill and deliciously allusive, “Camino” summons up vague suggestions of Dick Dale amalgamated with feline surfaces.
