Véyah – “Almost” [Song Review]
“Almost” (The Heavy Group/Snafu Records) is a grand, gilded song sung by an eighteen-year-old artist named Véyah, who is on the verge of prominence.
Pop/R&B vocalist Véyah recently introduced her debut single, “Almost,” via Snafu Records.
While there’s nothing unusual about an artist releasing their debut single, there is something unusual about Véyah – not only does she have a killer, crème de la crème voice, but she was discovered on TikTok, where her performances of songs went viral, resulting in hundreds of thousands of followers.
Véyah’s voice caught the ear of Jay Sean, who says, “I’ve been in the game a long time, and it gives me great pride and joy to be able to champion the next generation of South Asian artists crushing it out there. For example, Véyah is a once-in-a-lifetime talent. Her voice is absolutely insane; whether she is singing pop, R&B, or Hindi classics…she’s just THAT good.”
Her vocal gift also captured the interest of Snafu Records’ Head of Music, Sabine Feirabend. Feirabend explains, “Snafu’s algorithms found Véyah’s music on TikTok, and we were immediately blown away by her talent. She’s an absolute star. This is a perfect example of how the tech and creative are working in tandem for the creator’s benefit.”
Music is an art, and whether one likes it or doesn’t comes down to personal taste. In Véyah’s case, the ear of Jay Sean confirmed what the algorithm indicated – Véyah can sing. Oh, can she sing! And “Almost” substantiates it.
Blending tints of pop with the sumptuous smoothness of R&B, “Almost” allows listeners to brush against Véyah’s scrummy voice as it conveys swanky degrees of tonality and cashmere savours, at once sensual and haunting. It’s one of those voices residing between a rift and a revelation, honied and sinuously melodious.
