In just under three weeks time, Catton Hall in Derbyshire will be taken over by nearly 15,000 metal fans as Bloodstock Open Air returns with it’s strongest line-up yet. Topped by three incredible headliners in Behemoth, Mercyful Fate and Lamb of God, and featuring a supporting cast that includes Lorna Shore, Testament, Sleep Token, Cattle Decapitation and many more, over the next three weeks, we’re going to be picking our must see bands for the weekend.

Kicking off we’ve put together nine bands who will be gracing the Ronnie James Dio stage over the weekend. It was hell trying to narrow it down but here is our pick of the main stage bands.

1. Testament
When: Friday 12th August

There are few thrash bands from the golden age of thrash who can hold a torch to the titanic Testament. Arriving at Bloodstock in support of their monstrous Titans of Creation disc, the Chuck Billy led band will undoubtedly deliver a set packed to the brim with neck-snapping thrash classics like “Into The Pit” and “Practice What You Preach”.

Latest Release: Titans of Creation (2020)

2. Dark Funeral
When: Sunday 14th August

Early evening on the Ronnie James Dio stage, as we head to the final hours of Bloodstock 2022, there can be no better setting for the majestic return of Swedish black metal veterans Dark Funeral. Expect hell to rain down from the stage as the band unleash one of the unholiest forty minutes to be seen at Bloodstock all weekend.

Latest Release: We Are The Apocalypse (2022)

3. Bloodywood
When: Friday 12th August

Probably one of the bands we’re most excited about seeing at Bloodstock. Indian metal sensations Bloodywood will be bringing one of the most unique sets ever to grace the stage at Catton Hall. Supporting their incredible Rakshak album, their blend of Indian culture and bludgeoning metal will surely make their set one that we’ll be talking about long after the gates have closed at Bloodstock 2022.

Latest Release: Rakshak (2022)

4. Lamb of God
When: Sunday 14th August

Bringing the main stage to a close on the Sunday night, Virginia metal crew Lamb of God are preparing to unleash their long-awaited new album, Omens in September so, alongside a back catalogue of pit-wrecking metal anthems, hopefully Randy & Co will treat the Bloodstock faithful to a taster of what we can expect from Omens in a few weeks.

Latest Release: Lamb of God (2020)

5.Spirit World
When: Saturday 13th August

Hurtling out of the unbearable heat of the Las Vegas desert come Spirit World. Blending punk rock, Slayer riffs and hardcore brutality, Spirit World are going to make sure that your Saturday will kickstart in the loudest, most obnoxious way possible. With fans in both Gary Holt and Max Cavalera, Spirit World might end up being your favourite new find of the weekend.

Latest Release: Pagan Rhythms (2020)

6. Red Method
When: Friday 12th August

Expect mayhem when London bruisers Red Method are in town. Last time we crossed paths with the band, they were tearing it up on the Sophie Lancaster stage and it was unforgettable. This time, organisers have given them the unenviable task of opening the main stage for the entire weekend. Expect chaos, expect bangin’ industrial metal tunes, expect Red Method to set the main stage weekend off in explosive fashion.

Latest Release: For The Sick (2020)

7. Dimmu Borgir
When: Saturday 13th August

The return to Bloodstock of Norwegian symphonic black metal masters Dimmu Borgir has been a long time coming. Since their last appearance at Bloodstock where the band suffered horrendous technical difficulties, sickness and COVID has put pay to any plans the band had to put that right. On Saturday night as special guests to the mighty Mercyful Fate, expect the black metal heavyweights to put on the kind of epic performance to make the long wait very much worth it.

Latest Release: Eonian (2018)

8. Lorna Shore
When: Saturday 13th August

The appearance of blackened deathcore favourites Lorna Shore is one that is going to be unmissable. With their new album Pain Remains kicking about ready for release, Lorna Shore will arrive at Catton Hall on a wave of popularity that has already seen chaotic scenes on their recent UK tour. Anyone who thinks they’re in for a lazy Saturday afternoon can forget that once Will Ramos and Co step out onto the main stage.

Latest Release: …And I Return To Nothingness (2021)

9. Cattle Decapitation
When: Sunday 14th August

By the time grindcore terrors Cattle Decapitation arrive on stage at Bloodstock, the ears of the Bloodstock massive will have been well and truly battered by some of the best extreme music around. Enter Cattle Decapitation to kick your face right off with their blast furnace brutality. Originally scheduled for a Sophie Lancaster slot, the band will now be bringing their filth to the main stage on Sunday afternoon so make sure you’re prepared for an absolutely essential display of vile extremity.

Latest Release: Death Atlas (2019)
