Danny Goo Takes You Behind the Scenes of His “Better Off” Single [Video Premiere]
We’re peeling back the veil today and giving you a look at how Danny Goo operates in the studio. In this exclusive behind-the-scenes clip, Goo, along with his producer and long-time collaborator, JoJo Centineo, speak at length about his recent track “Better Off,” the first single released this past summer off of his brand new EP, Feel For You. Goo has been very active the last few months, releasing four singles off of the EP, due out on December 16th through Atoned Music.
The video gives you a front-row seat in the recording studio as Goo discusses the specifics of how he wrote “Better Off,” what motivated the song’s subject matter, and how it stands out among some of his most unique creations. Goo also gets into the production of the track, and some of the samples he used, including a sample from the 1983 Francis Ford Coppola film The Outsiders, a movie that Goo grew up loving. It’s truly an interesting look at songwriting and production and how it all goes down, something very few artists open up about.
Goo is rapidly emerging as a marquee name amongst a talented crop of up and coming indie artists. He’s not exactly a musician that is easy to pinpoint, with his sound combining a variety of genres, including rock, emo, R&B, alternative, and minimalist pop music. There’s a certain degree of emotional vulnerability to his music that makes Goo an easy artist to connect with, a likely reason why his fanbase is a particularly dedicated bunch. He specializes in blending contrasting genres and pumping out a vibrant, dynamic, and incredibly unique sound. From a more personal point of view, Goo endeavours to spread peace, love, and positivity with his music, which makes him an artist that’s easy to like.
To get to know him a little better, and to discuss the behind-the-scenes video for “Better Off,” we caught up with Goo to ask him a few questions about why he chose to do the video, his process, and his debut EP, Feel For You.
What is it about “Better Off” that convinced you that you had to make a behind the scenes video for it? Why specifically this track?
Danny Goo: “Because it’s is an important song to me. It’s the first song I dropped with my label and also the first single on my first EP. This song goes way back for me and I was at a low point and I wrote it.
What do you hope viewers take away from this behind the scenes look? What are you hoping to share with them?
“They get to see a little piece of what it might be like to be in the studio with me.”
Was “Better Off” a particularly challenging song from a recording point of view? What were some of the most significant challenges that came up when recording this song?
“It happened so fast, it wasn’t much of a challenge for me but it took a lot out of me emotionally.”
This seems like an intensely personal song for you. Do you find it difficult at all to bare your soul in such a passionate way to the listener?
“I hope the way I write is easy for people to relate to and help them through anything they’re going through in life.”
Your debut EP, Feel For You, is coming out in a few weeks. What can you tell us about the album?
“It’s plainspoken, honest, and very emotional. It’s the story of the first time I fell in and out of love.”
Over what time period was Feel For You written and recorded? Are these all recently composed songs?
“It was written in 2019, along with the rest of the EP, I think one song JoJo and I wrote in February 2020.”
