Have a Whole Lotta Fun Watching New Age Affair’s “Back Me Up” Video [Premiere]
If the music video for “Back Me Up” from South Dakota’s New Age Affair is any indication, we could all stand to use more punk rock in our lives. The video brings new meaning to DIY as we observe lead singer Derek Flick sitting on his couch, drinking a beer, and watching his own band take the lead during one rowdy house party.
“Back Me Up” is one of the standout tracks on the group’s debut album, Too Messed Up, which was recently released via Manic Kat Records. The album is what you would call a whole lotta fun, with the band easily bridging the gaps between punk rock, post-hardcore, and alternative rock while making it all sound very upbeat and coherent. As a whole, Too Messed Up is defined by its infectious hooks, accomplished guitar work, and Flick’s emotive lyrics which may remind you of genre mainstays such as Masked Intruder, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! and MXPX.
The music video for “Back Me Up” perfectly sums up New Age Affair and what they value as a band. They are all about having a good time while keeping things simple, straight up, and off the cuff. You may assume that the video is what it is due to the restrictions that have been put in place as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic. On the contrary, this is the type of video that has been a goal of the band for some time now. Commenting on the video, Flick said, “Doing a music video like ‘Back Me Up’ has been a dream of mine forever. All we had to do was party and put a camera up.”
Partying comes naturally for listeners of New Age Affair. The band initially got the party started in 2017 with the release of their debut single “Reset,” shortly after brothers Derek and Gage Flick formed the band that summer. They then released their debut EP Sold Out which was well-received locally before the buzz began to spread to other states. The New York-based Manic Kat Records was quick to observe the excitement growing and quickly signed the band. While they continue to await the green light to hit the road, New Age Affair are all too happy to be the soundtrack to your living room festivities.
