Papa Roach have gone from being a bunch of angsty, nu-metal upstarts to a band who write the kind of slick modern rock anthems that, when coupled with the levels of energy Jacoby Shaddix and his bandmates put into each and every performance, put on a simply sensational rock show.

Tonight in Manchester was no exception as the band stormed out of the starting blocks and straight into “Crooked Teeth” and “Getting Away With Murder”. What followed was a glorious ninety minute rock show as the band plundered their hit-filled back catalogue to smash out the likes of “She Loves Me Not”, “Scars” and newer tracks like “Periscope” to a fanbase who lapped up every minute of it. Whipping up the crowd into a frenzy at every given opportunity, Shaddix and his bandmates battered out a rendition of Blur hit “Song 2” while their cover of Linkin Park’s “In The End”, which saw them joined by the voices of nearly two thousand fans, was a magnificent tribute to their departed friend.

Elsewhere, old songs mixed effortlessly with new songs as the double-whammy of “Dead Cell” and “Last Resort”, like the band themselves, sounded as fresh as they did when the band burst onto the scene over fifteen years ago.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
