Last night was the opening night of Canadian Music Week and I decided to check out Breakfast who were opening for Fidlar at The Great Hall. An all ages, sold out show, there was a healthy amount of youths buzzing at the front of the stage waiting to see what Breakfast would bring.
Although Breakfast is 3/4 of the remnants of Elos Arma they have forged a different musical path with the help of new member Angelo Gambatesa. Gone is their earlier pop/folk induced sound, replaced with a more aggressive, punk inspired feel. What remains however, is the captivating balance of soft to harsh vocals, the high energy of Chris LaRocca and the intricate conversation between Mark Procopio‘s drums with Jon Watters’ bass.
I think what struck me most about Breakfast’s performance was their ability to adapt. There was a time or two where a hiccup occurred and, unless you were looking for it you wouldn’t have noticed. These are musicians that know how to keep the show going, who know how to gauge their audience, and are willing to make adjustments in order to give the best performance they can every time. I look forward to seeing where this new direction takes this talented group of music makers.
