Dire Omen – “Severing Soul From Flesh” [EP]

Dire Omen are an Edmonton-based blackened death metal band who recently released their album Severing Soul From Flesh via Serpents Head Reprisal. As far as blackened death metal goes, Dire Omen are the real deal. The band’s music gives off a sinister aura and sounds like real death metal should – dark, scary and heavy as fuck!

Singer and guitarist Rolanda Rodas sounds like he is conjuring the devil himself in most of the songs while the rest of the band pummel the listener into oblivion. While the tracks probably won’t appeal to many outside of the death metal spectrum, what is here is extremely high quality stuff. At times Dire Omen brings to mind bands such as Deicide and Morbid Angel, while at others, Suffocation. Having had the pleasure of seeing the band live, I can attest that they can deliver the goods in person as well.

The only complaint I can really make about the album is the fact that at 16 minutes long, it’s just too short. Hopefully they can make it into the studio again in the near future as they really do have a lot of potential. Severing Soul From Flesh is a great introduction to the band and can be purchased on CD, cassette or digital download.
