Album Review
Elias – “Fossils”
Fossils is the newest release from Vancouver, Canadian indie rock band Elias and from the moment I popped this disc into my player I knew I was going to like it. It’s not heavy by any means, but it’s so well-produced and the songs are so inviting, that I felt compelled to listen further; it is a multi-layered, multi-dimensional CD that is a very enjoyable listen. The songs are fresh, innovative and highly creative; at times they’re powerful and at others they convey an almost ethereal mood.

I listened to this album the conventional way, over my speakers the first time through, but because it’s so smooth-sounding I really wanted to check it out on my studio headphones; man am I glad I did. There’s a ton of depth to this disc and while listening on my headphones I was able to really pick out and appreciate all of the subtle nuances running through the songs. The album as a whole seems to work well and invites the listener to sit back, contemplate and perhaps draw their own meaning from the work.
These guys wear their influences on their sleeves and it is easy to hear hints of Radiohead, Muse and even Oasis in their work. Don’t get the wrong idea though, because I feel they do a great job of processing those influences into something truly unique and all their own. I highly recommend checking out Fossils, it really is a fantastic album.
