AWOLNATION – “Sail” [Song Review]

AWOLNATION, new indie/alternative rock band or someone’s high school nickname? Actually both. AWOLNATION is the brand new band/solo project of Aaron Bruno, formerly of the bands Under the Influence of Giants and Hometown Hero. The band’s debut solo record Megalithic Symphony was released back in March and so far has received a lot of recognition, largely thanks to the record’s first single “Sail.”

“Sail” is an interesting song in that it isn’t quite indie rock and it isn’t quite alternative rock and it isn’t quite electronic rock; it is really a mishmash of all three genres. Parts of the song sound like something Trent Reznor would have produced, but there is also kind of a rock and blues feel to it thanks to the beat and the way Bruno sings the song. You can bob your head back and forth to it and at the same time really get an appreciation for its production value. On top if it all, there are some very cool drum effects and a cool clap along beat. “Sail” is a very good first showing from Bruno and his new project.
