Korn – “Korn III: Remember Who You Are”

Korn III: Remember Who You Are is the latest offering from the nu-metal band that took the world by storm just a short while ago, selling over 35 million records and receiving 2 Grammy Awards and 6 nominations. While admittedly I have not been the biggest fan of the band in the past, I do appreciate and recognize that Korn is a force to be reckoned with, after all 35 million people can’t be all wrong.

I must say however, that after listening to this disc a few times I felt sort of disappointed and somewhat let down. While the songs do still have that trademark Korn sound we have come to associate them with, the songs on here seem different, and not necessarily in a good way. To me many of the songs come across as scattered, disconnected and at times hard to listen to. A real good example of this is the tune “Lead The Parade” which really, to me, seems to be all over the place and at times incoherent and a painful listen.

I did find some bright spots on this disc as well; it is not all bad. I particularly liked “Oildale (Leave Me Alone)” and “Holding All These Lies.” Both of these songs are more structured, less scattered and just stood out to me as really good tunes.

Hardcore fans of the band will still probably eat this album up, but for me it is a sort of mixed bag. While it is not a bad effort, I don’t feel it compares to previous releases such as Issues and See You On The Other Side. Bottom line it is a wash… for me the good moments equal the number of bad moments on the disc and for that reason I probably will not spin it all that often.  [ END ]
