Creature With The Atom Brain hail from Belgium and the fuzzy rock four piece released their second album Transylvania last month through The End Records and after just one listen it’s clear their sound has not differed hugely since their 2008 debut, I Am The Golden Gate Bridge.

The album opens with “I Rise The Moon” which starts off with a neat melody and slow rhythm. It would be fair to say that two minutes later you’re still listening to that exact melody at the same pace. Unfortunately much of the album is the same. Bar a few rare moments the pace is slow and unchallenging, while melodies seem to be stuck on repeat. It’s no help that the voice of Aldo Struyf can be unemotional and quite tiresome too. Sometimes you forget you’re even listening to any music at all.

However, if you can stay awake long enough, you may, with repeated listening, find the true quality in the album. Although their music can be very repetitive Creature With The Atom Brain have an overall sound which fits into place considerably well. There are hooks in there somewhere which you need an open mind for, to find them and appreciate this record.

People looking for something new and exciting to listen to, will probably find this group of songs a disappointment. However, lovers of early 90’s grunge may find some love for Creature With The Atom Brain. There’s a very sludgy feel to the record and in a sense could also be described as psychedelic or even stoner rock. It’s maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but somewhere in Belgium there is bound to be a smoke filled bedroom with a couple of guys in their element listening to the soothing remedies of Creature With The Atom Brain.  [ END ]
