Woe of Tyrants

Kingdom Of Might the debut release for Metal Blade act Woe of Tyrants is set for release January 6th, 2009 and man is this one hell of a CD. Every song is well-constructed, and heavy as hell. The band has managed to successfully combine numerous musical styles with a terrific final outcome. Thrash Metal, Black Metal and even Power Metal all seamlessly mix together to form a collection of heavy-as-shit melodic tunes that should appeal to a large portion of the Metal Community. Often times the music is quite aggressive with heavy rhythm guitars churning away while a cleaner lead guitar shreds the frets with reckless abandon. Add in the guttural growls of Chris Costanzaro and you have a vicious and visceral assault that any fan of modern metal should enjoy.

Two tracks stand out to me as being highlights. The first is “Sounding Jerusalem,” for the aforementioned reason; the driving guitars are accented with some expert technical lead playing. The second song and the one I believe sets this band apart from many others out there is “Sons Of Thunder,” an instrumental track that highlights just what this band is capable of; a melding of the aforementioned genres capped off with a southern fried twist, this is a great song.

At times, I felt the overall production got a bit muddy and muddled and some of the instrumentation and or vocals were hard to decipher but I still dig what these guys are doing by combining the genres and I give them props for what I believe is a successful attempt. Overall, this is a fine album and one that I would recommend without reservations.  [ END ]
