Over the years, Thrash Metal has had its ups and downs. As most probably know, until recently Thrash had really died down. Thankfully a recent trend has seen numerous new, young bands reviving this once more-adored genre. Moreover, the very veterans that fueled this super sound back in the early 80’s are also again coming out to play. Ground-breaking Thrash act Soulfly, just came back with their sixth studio album, Conquer, and are a fine example of a Thrash band that have endured over the years. Their new record is great and only emphasizes one thing, Thrash is back!

Speaking of Throwdown, Dave Peters (vocalist of Throwdown), actually contributes guest vocals on this album during the song “Unleash”. What a coincidence! Morbid Angel vocalist, David Vincent, also contributes guest vocals during “Blood Fire War Hate”. I guess Cavalera wanted this album to be heavier than Dark Ages, and that is exactly what he fucking got.

The entire album is darker, heavier, and more brutal than any record Soulfly has ever released. The odd random sounds throughout the album catch the listener off guard, and actually got me to laugh. Yep. It’s that random. The odd sounds actually flow very smoothly with the sound the band was trying to portray; epic music deserves epic effects.

The special edition of this disc actually has a few bonus tracks on it. Three of them to be exact (Unfortunately.. I did not receive this edition). I was so excited to see a cover of Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People”. If the track is half as good as Eighteen Visions’ version, I’m sure we’re all in for a treat.

As per usual, every Soulfly album has a “Soulfly” track. So, this album being the sixth one to date, it only makes sense to title this track “Soulfly VI”. I’m not even going to give anything away about this jam, just that it’s a huge change from the bands usual style… proving to be very memorable.  [ END ]
