Sky Eats Airplane

Everything Perfect on the Wrong Day (11.20.2007)

Cross blending genres has been going on for years. Blending metal and techno to form industrial, metal and hardcore to form metalcore, and now finally, hardcore blended with electronica, which is now rapidly becoming known as “nintendocore”. A few bands fall under this new genre: Horse The Band, Enter Shikari, as well as the group in question, Sky Eats Airplane. Sky Eats Airplane definitely stands above all when it comes to the genre.

The album, Everything Perfect on the Wrong Day was actually self-produced by just two guys: Lee Duck and Brack Cantrell. These two guys got their buddies from Coalesce, provided them with drum and synth arrangements, enabling them to complete their album. There is only one word for the album – masterpiece.

It can prove to be tricky to create synth without the tracks sounding too similar or lame, however, Sky Eats Airplane managed to pull it off very nicely. Even the lyrical construction is awe-inspiring, ranging from simple lines such as: “But what’s done is done, and now I can’t come back” over to “Be careful of that mind of yours, they say/ It can play tricks on you when you’re led astray”, which is very true when you think about it. The band portrays many human emotions and thoughts that the majority of us think or do every single day of our lives.

The second quotation above is from the track “The Messenger”, which actually frightened me to my very core. I had nightmares about this track. If you are of the faint heart, or suffer from an overactive imagination, I do not recommend this track. With other lines such as: “You realized the deeper secrets of mankind/And is there a reward for winning the game?/You will simply be left behind” it’s tough not to shudder. It didn’t really help that the instrumentation alone is just as chilling as the lyrical content.

If any of you have hesitated about picking this album up, hesitate no more. Go out and pick it up… now!. If this is what the band can do self-producing, I can’t even imagine their evolution over the next five years.  [ END ]
