Anthems For The Damned (05.13.2008)

The fourth release from Alt-Industrial-Rockers, Filter is entitled Anthems For The Damned and dropped in May of 2008. The band does not shy away from controversy and hasn’t since their debut album, Short Bus, which carried the single “Nice Shot Man” and was rumored to be written about Kurt Cobain’s suicide. On Anthems of The Damned, founding member and the only original member, Richard Patrick once again tackles issues that are both current and controversial. With songs ranging the gamut from criticisms on World Affairs, to anti-war/pro troop songs.

The first track “Soldiers Of Misfortune,” is a prime example where Patrick states, “I’d like to wake from this dream/In worlds where they don’t scream/In worlds without misery.” Considering everything that is going on around us this is very much a commentary on the society we live in.

Musically this is typical Filter fare, even though it is a bit more reserved and toned down then past releases. Don’t get me wrong this is not a soft album by any means and the band has maintained their trademark driving beat carries that resonates throughout all twelve tracks.

Tracks I believe worth mentioning are “Hatred is Contagious”, “In Dreams”, and the hardest rocking tune on the disc “The Take” which is very reminiscent of classic Filter.

Anthems For The Damned does not tread any new territory and is not quite as heavy as previous Filter releases, however it is a solid release beginning to end that fans of the band and the genre in general will be quite enthusiastic about.  [ END ]
