Farewell To Freeway

Canadian Metal has seen some interesting twists, and of course has seen some amazing bands emerge from the shadows. These groups could include Kataklysm, Straight Reads The Line, Arise And Ruin, and of course, Farewell To Freeway. Now although Farewell To Freeway isn’t classified as Heavy Metal, they are still furiously heavy. They do play typical Post Hardcore, which lately as a genre, has been growing at a rapid pace.

Their newest album, Definitions is quite a bit different from their previous work; it’s heavier, has more rhythm, and has a shit-load more breakdowns. I recently saw the band play with The Sound of Sirens, Kathleen Turner Overdrive, and Protest The Hero, and their set was definitely memorable.

As with most Post Hardcore, the band’s vocals alternate between screams and clean vocals, usually done by the same vocalist. This time however, the vocals are done by almost everybody, including the bass player, one guitar player, the drummer, and the keyboardist. The main vocals are performed by Chris and Adam, which just so happen to be brothers.

This disc is more than what you would expect from a Guelph, Ontario based band and as aforementioned, has many more breakdowns than their previous material, giving the music more of an aggression. The music does go back and forth between breakdowns, heavy riffs, and then way over to softer, more melodic instrumentation. “Sound Minds” is certainly one of those tracks that crosses over quite frequently… and well I might add.

If you like A Day To Remember, Sky Eats Airplane, or even Enter Shikari, I’d give these guys a good listen. Even fans of Emmure may be impressed with the compositions! Farewell To Freeway is more like “hello to the road” ahead!  [ END ]
