Eyes Set To Kill
When Silence Is Broken The Night Is Torn (2006)

In today’s musical society, too many bands are going emo or “scene” as some might call it. Eyes Set To Kill are one of these types of bands, but they aren’t the hardcore emo, they’re screamo (thank God)! Formed only back in 2004, this band has taken the MySpace world by storm, becoming one of the hugest bands on the website to date. This Phoenix based band started out as a three piece, but soon evolved into the six piece band we know today. These six talented artists would be Lindsey Vogt (vocals), Caleb Clifton (drums), Brandon Anderson (vocals), Alexia Rodriquez (guitar), Anissa Rodriquez (bass), and John Moody (guitar). This has got to be the most interesting line-up I’ve ever seen. I’ve never once seen three guys and three girls in one single band.
The very first track on the album is “Intro,” which as the title explains, is just an intro… a little acoustic guitar with Lindsey’s soothing vocals over-top. After a few minutes, the track opens up into “This Love You Breathe.” The song begins with a steady drum beat, which in turn rips into a wicked guitar riff. Brandon’s scream is most suiting to the band’s playing style. Once the volume drops down quite a bit, Lindsey adds her angelic harmonies, creating a sort of mystical sense. The “emo” sense of the track has probably got to be in the slow playing style of the band. Now it’s a bit hard to place my finger on exactly what is it, but once you hear it, it’s quite distinguishable.
Seventh on the album is “Bitter Pill.” When I first saw the track name, I thought it was a cover of Silent Civilian’s “Bitter Pill.” Bands need to stop using the same names of existing tracks. However, the song still kicks ass. The guitar riffs are unbelievable, as are Brandon’s screams. Lindsey’s melodic voice is soothing to the ear, giving the ear drums a bit of a rest from the brutality.
“Pure White Lace” would have to be the last track on the LP. The track starts off with a bit of an emo-sounding riff, but once the vocals and drums kick in, the style changes a bit, more towards the hardcore sense. Obviously, the band ascends with their palm mutes, and their hammer-ons and pull-offs, but the distortion level the band uses just doesn’t quite sound too appealing to the ear when using full chords.
To conclude, I’d have to say this album is one of the best non-label records I have heard to date. Not a lot of bands can push this far in only less than 3 years, not to mention without a record label to back them up. Kudos! I give the album an 8.3/10. [ END ]
