Album Review
SOiL
True Self (2006)

Over the years, Soil have released 3 full-length albums, True Self being the third. But this album marks the beginning of change. A change that will further their careers, and help them reach levels they previously couldn’t have even dreamt about. With a new lead vocalist, a new record label, this gun is fully loaded, and ready to fire. The new line-up would happen to be AJ Cavalier (lead vocals), Adam Zadel (guitar/backing vocals), Shaun Glass (guitar), Tim King (bass), and Tom Schofield (drums).
First up on the album is “Fight For Life.” The intro starts off with a simple, steady beat, which you would assume would lead into a rock and roll sounding song, and just rock out. But, after the little introduction, the song turns for the heavy, the heavy metal that is! Cavalier’s rough vocals ascend Soil up to new heights, slapping the Hard Rock scene hard across the face.
Seventh on the album is “Forever Dead” which has probably got to be the most furious track on the entire album. The speed and intensity barely lets up, even when Cavalier is singing. Cavalier’s sense of when to sing, and when to scream is unbelievable; he truly does a phenomenal job. Tom’s drum skills are out of this world, and the music is just amazing. I would be honoured to be in the pit during this track, hoping somebody doesn’t knock me out, getting too into the song.
Eighth up on the album is “Let Go.” The band takes a bit of a turn for this track, showing a more melodic side to their music. It really shows how much the band has improved over the years, and how epic they will become one day. With the ability to compose a song that really gets to the heart (and to compose heavier tracks as well) is a huge achievement. Cavalier’s vocals aren’t so rough in “Let Go,” but can get a bit harsher at times. As I mentioned before, he chooses the right times when to raise the volume of his voice, and reach its full peak.
To conclude, I’d have to say I’m very impressed with the new album. I began listening to them when they had the original singer, when the album Redefine dropped. I’m truly honoured to have reviewed this album, and I only wish the best of luck for the band. I know someday they will make it to the top. I give this album an 8/10. [ END ]
