Album Review
Blind Guardian
A Twist In The Myth (2006)
Power Metal bands have been around for quite some time, including bands such as Iron Maiden, Dragonforce, Hammerfall, etc etc. Blind Guardian is another band in the Power Metal genre, having formed back in 1984. This German group consists of Hansi Kürsch (vocals/bass), André Olbrich (lead guitar), Marcus Siepen (rhythm guitar), and Frederik Ehmke (drums).
First up on the album is “This Will Never End.” As many of you already know, Blind Guardian tend to base a lot of their tracks on the writings of novelists they admire. This track is a prime example of that tendency as “This Will Never End” is based on the novel Wild Ride Through the Night, written by Walter Moers. One of the reasons as to why the band bases a lot of tracks on novels is assumedly to bring an epic image or feel about their works of art.
Third on the disc is “Turn The Page.” When I first noticed this track was on A Twist In The Myth, I first assumed that it was a cover of the famous Metallica track, but man was I wrong. Turns out the track is entirely new, and is actually based on Wicca. More specifically the ritual of Renewal; which ultimately gives a happy, bouncy sound to the track.
Stephen King is a great horror writer. One of the best in my eyes. Especially his novel The Drawing of the Three. Now a lot of you are probably wondering what any of what I just said has to do with Blind Guardian. Well it has a lot to do with them. The entire band are huge King fans and the track “Another Stranger To Me” is all about Stephen King’s novel, The Drawing of the Three. The band depicts the novel amazingly well. Most of the lyrics are about a person with multiple personalities, and the person becomes aware of this fact. This has got to be the best track on the album in my eyes!
All I can really say about the album is Wow! This is in my opinion one of the best albums the band has put out to date and they haven’t lose their epic, Power Metal edge at all. I give this album an 8.1/10. [ END ]
