Album Review
Citizen Cope
Every Waking Moment (2006)
The trend of stripped down music has been the highlight, for me anyways, in 2006 and hooray for a talented Clarence Greenwood who easily and gracefully treats us to a delightful mix of hip-hop, rock and R&B on his latest release Every Waking Moment. The album’s overall feel is just “chill,” makes you want to kick back and smoke a joint… if you are into that kind of thing.
Right off the bat comparisons to Ben Harper and Jack Johnson have been made, but comparisons to me, don’t mean much. The instrumental track “Awe” infuses ska-like qualities with its horns, while there is this bluseyness to it that captivates.
Lyrically, Greenwood creates fictional characters, and writes as a whole rather to a particular thing. So I mentioned the hip-hop, rock and r&b influences on the album, but listening closely we can add some folk, and to spice things up some psychedelic.
Fans from the past and present will be pleased with this release. 7 bongs out of 10. And no, I’m not a pot junkie! [ END ]
