Despite society’s natural preference to categorize everything, The Quick & Easy Boys do their best to avoid the follies of genrefication. You can hear it in their new single “Better Than Today,” which they are pleased to unveil today. The power trio likes to venture off into different musical terrains, and this song is perhaps their most adventurous.

“Better Than Today” illustrates the band expanding their already vast horizons, with a sound reminiscent of early 1960s R&B and surf rock. The song has wonderful melodies and is as radio-friendly as you could find. It fits their stated objective to be different, original, and maybe just a little weird. It’s not a deliberate attempt to create crossover appeal; it’s all about what feels right. That’s essentially the guiding principle of The Quick and Easy Boys.

Discussing the new single, bass guitarist and singer Sean Badders says:

“I’ve had this song kicking around for a while. But it never seemed the right time to try and record it during past album sessions, for whatever reason. I’ve always loved old R&B songs from the ’50s and ’60s, especially when the vibe is fun and danceable but the lyrics are just sad borderline emo. So that’s what we set out to do. This was one of many songs recorded during a two-day session fueled by mushrooms, tequila, and fresh matching track-suits, and it just felt like the right time to pull it off.

We recorded at Red Rockets Glare in PDX and have our wonderful friends Raymond Richards and Steve Kerin playing lap steel and keys on this track as well, really adding to the vibe we were going for. The same recording session yielded this, as well as the holiday single “Jesus, Where’s My Presents?” They also yielded all the basic tracks for our upcoming Scary Things EP which is very dark and heavy musically, and another album rooted in funk and R&B. We really went for it and are thrilled with the results.”

This is shaping up to be an exciting year for The Quick & Easy Boys, their 20th together. As Badders made mention of, they have a new EP titled Scary Things on the way soon. The band members are now shifting focus towards completing that record, promising an expansive listening experience. Initially, upon forming, the band was viewed as being too unconventional to fit in. This created many promotional challenges, which required them to put a lot of legwork in.

Many national tours helped expose them to various audiences, which helped them develop a fanbase. And any sophisticated music listener knows that variety and diversity are valued traits. You’ll hear more of what we mean when Scary Things is released, with the band tapping into everything from this classic R&B sound to even stoner metal.
