Planet Giza – “Added Sugar” [Album Review]
Montreal hip-hop trio Planet Giza have a sure-fire indicator of future success with their consistent, methodical album, Added Sugar.
Hip-hop is always searching for someone new. Either new artists explode into hip-hop’s stardom, or they fall into its vast vat of mediocrity. You usually know which path is ahead for the artist based on their music, and judging by this album, with its creativity and work ethic, it’s clear Planet Giza are on the right path.
The Montreal hip-hop trio, consisting of Rami B, Tony Stone and Dumix, fly under the radar with this piece of work. Not only do they dress and have the glamour of a ‘90s group, but their music is consistent from start to finish. The beats are methodical, fused with a blend of R&B, soul and funk. With features including Mick Jenkins, and a co-produced track from Kaytranada, you might say there is a future in store for these boys. And that future most definitely begins today.
Tracks such as “Timeless//3 Stacks”, “Charge It” and “S.O.S” will have you wanting more. So many questions that you might have about this group will have to wait to be answered. But, for now, sit back, relax and enjoy one of the smoothest hip-hop albums of the year so far.
