Cane Hill Drummer Devin Clark Lists His Top 10 Underrated Grunge Bands [Exclusive]
New Orleans metal quartet, Cane Hill, took a plunge into somewhat morose new waters with the January 18th release of their Kill the Sun EP via Rise Records. Drummer Devin Clark helped us better understand the band’s new sound with a list of his Top 10 underrated grunge artists.
Fiery New Orleans-based metal quartet, Cane Hill, known thus far for their driving rhythms, gritty guitar riffs and visceral vocals, recently took a plunge into new waters with the January 18th release of their six-song Kill the Sun EP via Rise Records. The new album saw the group begin flirting with the “weirder and mellower side” of their musical creativity resulting in a somewhat morose and angsty offering that’s a “dark, twisted, and semi-acoustic beauty.”
While not the guys’ usual fodder, the music remains just as “heavy” yet somehow even more poignant than prior releases — check out the new album here. With some time on his hands, we were lucky enough to connect via email with drummer Devin Clark to better understand the roots behind this unexpected curveball for the band. Low and behold, Clark is a huge grunge junkie and left us with a list of his Top 10 most underrated grunge artists.
1. Silverchair
“A band that was around the same time as the big ones! These Australians were coming to the party with songs like, “Tomorrow,” which put along the vibes of Pearl Jam.”
2. Collective Soul
“I first heard their song “Shine” driving down a Mississippi back road. Amazing hooks and amazing drum work.”
Check out the band’s recent video for the single “86d – No Escort”.
3. Garbage
“The song “The World Is Not Enough” is a masterpiece! It also got featured on a 007 movie (which is how I found it).”
4. Bush
“DON’T LET THE DAYS GO BY!!! I stumbled across this band in High School and they’ve been stuck in my head ever since.”
5. Candlebox
“My brother’s high school girlfriend showed me the song “Far Behind” (what an amazing one). While he was banging his head to Korn, she was getting sad to Candlebox.”
6. Temple of the Dog
“Who doesn’t love Chris Cornell?! Their song “Hunger Strike” will forever be ingrained in my brain.”
7. Jerry Cantrell
“When I’ve listened to all the Alice I could, I moved on to Boggy Depot. What an amazing songwriter and musician, so be sure to check out the song “Cut You In.””
As aforementioned, the Kill the Sun EP came out on January 18th, 2019, via Rise Records.
8. Porcupine Tree
“What started out as a solo project in ‘87 turned into a massive machine. My personal favorite is “The Sound Of Muzak.””
9. Creed
“A LOT of people will hate me for this but Creed had it all. The riffs, the groove, and hooks on hooks. I gotta go with “What If” for a song!”
10. Puddle of Mudd
“First time ever hearing this band was back when MTV still aired good music! The song “Blurry” was the track of most of my High School life.”
