Vocalist Fanny Christie commented on the track as follows: “‘Cuckoo Bird’ has been a fan favorite of ours for years, it still remains really close to my/our hearts. I was drawn to it because of the beautiful banjo and also the kind of haunting way Clarence Ashley voiced it. I really connected with the sound of it on an emotional level. Actually recording it was pretty easy. We got the track done quickly since we had played it live so often. The song was pretty much muscle memory for us at that point.”
