Idlewar – “Dig In” [Album Review]
At certain times on Dig In, Idlewar show exactly how effective it can be when the distortion and riffs are cranked up to maximum!
Considering everything Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters touch turns into a fuckload of dollars (aside from his recent mishap in Sweden which resulted in the Special One breaking his leg), it isn’t surprising that there is now a whole generation of new bands who are putting their own little twist on Grohl’s riff-fuelled rock. Californian three-piece, Idlewar, are just one of those groups but, thankfully, this isn’t just some watered-down imitation.
Instead, what you find on the five tracks that make up Dig In, the debut EP from these Southern Californian rockers, is something that marries the distorted almost stoner groove adopted by bands like Clutch with the kind of dirty hooks and rough-sounding riffs that could be lifted from much of the early Foo Fighters material. Mix up the two and you end up with tracks like the mid-paced “Feel The Pain” and the full throttle rock fury of opener “Chunk Of Me,” where Idlewar show exactly how effective it can be when the distortion and riffs are cranked up to maximum!
If their debut EP is an indicator and they keep banging out cracking songs like opener “Chunk Of Me”, this trio are certainly going to be one to keep your eyes on over the coming months. So, love him or loathe him, you can’t help but thank Grohl for inspiring bands like Idlewar to pick up their instruments and bang out some filthy riffs.
