Whitemare – “Screamer” [EP]
“No beatdowns just beat-ups” promises the bumph that accompanies Screamer, the new EP from Brighton scum punks Whitemare. Thirteen minutes of scuzzy, scummy, bloody-knuckled punk rock and name-dropped in the same breath as bands like Kvelertak and Every Time I Die, Whitemare certainly get straight in your face with opener “Elm Grave”. Sure, for good measure, there is a hint of old-time rock n’ roll in there but, on the whole, Screamer is just a frenzied punk rock ride that isn’t for the faint hearted or those who like something lyrically that is a little less abrasive.

Then again, with seven tracks clocking in at just over twelve minutes, what did you expect? If you’re a Dream Theater fan don’t expect to find anything you could stroke your beard to amongst these twelve minutes. Same goes for Mastodon fans – don’t expect too much progressive, genre-defyning heaviness nestling in the 41 seconds of “Snider”. On the other hand, you get the impression the Whitemare guys must have had a blast smashing out the brilliant “Metallicaz Playing At My House” in the studio so expect their live show to be one punk rock party you won’t forget in a long time.
