Album Review
Dog Fashion Disco
Beating a Dead Horse to Death…Again (10.28.2008)
Not only did the name Dog Fashion Disco grab my attention, but the album cover for Beating a Dead Horse to Death…Again intrigued me. A purple horse hangs from a noose on a tree, broken open like a piñata, while three happy little children eat the candy that is spilling out of the horse’s stomach. As gruesome as this may sound, this is the exact same cover you will find in your local CD store.
Many refer to Dog Fashion Disco as an avant-garde metal band and I can definitely see why they would be labeled this way. Most of this rarities album deals with uncomfortable or sensitive subjects such as death, the occult and homosexuality. For example, the first few songs cover topics such as Satan’s spawn, the Day of the Dead, being buried alive and the devil’s wife.
The music is both brutal and unpredictable. Every single track on this album is completely different from the next, smoothly transitioning from a variety of genres such as metal, blues and jazz. I was caught off guard by “Turning Gay” and “Hank Steel The Real Queer Cowboy” which are a couple of prank songs at the end of the album. I was under the impression that they were improvising on these two…
Beating a Dead Horse to Death…Again is an eclectic and an accurate reflection of Dog Fashion Disco’s prolific musical career. Fans will not be disappointed by this dark and genre-bending album. [ END ]
