The Funeral Pyre – “Wounds”

As of late, blackened death metal hasn’t really seen that many new rising bands. Thankfully the Funeral Pyre is ready to change that. It has been a while since the world has seen a decent blackened death metal band and this being said, I’d like to place The Funeral Pyre in the rankings with Satyricon.

Unlike the band’s previous work, this album contains no keyboards what-so-ever. This actually disappointed me. It’s very rare to find a band with black metal influence that does not use keyboards or synth of some type.

“Arches Of Existance” is one of the more interesting tracks on the album. and while it does have a slow introduction, the track itself is incredibly fast-paced and heavy. As usual, the song does have a very melodic feel about it, as most black metal normally possesses.

“Devourer” is quite possibly my favourite track on the disc. While the instrumentation is somewhat simplistic, it is epic! Throughout the majority of the song, it is easy to imagine a mountain scene, with knights and demons scaling to the top, possibly attempting to wage war with some unknown common enemy at the apex.

Wounds does have potential to be great. While I found The Nature Of Betrayal had more to offer, many others may disagree. I’m very much looking forward to the band’s next effort.  [ END ]
