Album Review
Amon Amarth
Twilight of the Thunder God (09.30.2008)
In the past, Amon Amarth has come out strong by pushing the envelope and staying ahead of the curve in their genre; their newest release Twilight of the Thunder God is no exception. Amon Amarth’s eagerly awaited full-length studio album opens with the title track “Twilight of the Thunder God” and things quickly get set in motion as the band launches into their classic dark “Viking” metal sound that includes, ferocious guitars and thundering drums galore, combined with menacing throat-ripping vocals that do not let up until the very last track, “Embrace Of The Endless Ocean”. In between are nine other classic Death Metal ditties that are both vicious and visceral. Lyrically the band invites the listener to step back in time and into a world of Vikings as they collectively delve into historical Nordic themes and ancient folklore.
Other notable tracks on this CD include: “No Fear of the Setting Sun,” which as far as I am concerned, is undoubtedly one of the heaviest out of the ten tracks and my personal favorite “Free Will Sacrifice”, which is built around a stellar riff and some terrific guitar work.
Twilight of the Thunder God even includes a guest appearance by the famed metal orchestral players, Apocolyptica, who juxtapose their string arrangements with the blistering guitars and vocals of Amon Amarth making for a very interesting composition.
Amon Amarth is a band that has been around for a while now and with the release of Twilight of the Thunder God they have solidified their status as one of truly great bands and masters of the genre. Metal fans in general will not at all be disappointed with this record! [ END ]
