Album Review
Bison b.c.
Quiet Earth (09.30.2008)

Taking their name from a powerfully strong and wild beast, Vancouver based Bison b.c. have just released their new CD, Quiet Earth. Heavy and unbelievably aggressive, with incredibly detailed guitar work this CD is a hard, in-your-face, all out metal record. The music is relentlessly heavy with an underlying groove to it that can best be described as ‘Stoner Metal’; slow and heavy as hell.
The album art also carries forth a theme that was started back on the bands first CD, Earthbound, and is based around the thought of a society having it all and then losing it due to their own arrogance, then having to resort to primitive ways while still retaining certain aspects of advanced technology; very much a doom and gloom sort of vibe. Especially on tunes such as “Quiet Earth” with lyrics such as this, “Hand of God, mushroom cloud/ Sacred Shroud, send it down/Wisdom lies, love it died/Father’s pride, lay down and die/Quiet Earth.” This is a very unusual topic, especially when explored through the heavy metal viewpoint of Bison b.c. According to vocalist Dan And, “The CD really speaks volumes as to how our society works and how comfortable we have become with our lives while it seems as though there is truly an impending doom looming just beyond the horizon.”
Sonically, Quiet Earth is a full-on aural assault from beginning to end as the listener is barraged by a wall of super distorted guitars and raging vocals that include more than an occasional guttural growl.
Tracks that I am particularly fond of are “These Are My Dress Clothes,” “Medication” and the aforementioned “Quiet Earth.” What Bison b.c. have done here is create an extremely heavy set of tunes which differ from those of their peers. This definitely will be a welcome and necessary addition to every Metal Head’s catalog. [ END ]
