Album Review
Leatherwolf
New World Asylum (2007)
Long musical careers are not uncommon in today’s day and age. Leatherwolf is no exception to this new trend of timeless music. The band released its first full length LP in 1985. That is a long-ass time ago! Hell, the idea of me gracing the world with my idiotic presence wasn’t even thought of yet.
I would compare the musical abilities of the men in Leatherwolf to that of Iron Maiden, however, it really should be the opposite. Leatherwolf formed before Iron Maiden had attacked the world with its nearly deadly music.
Although the band does not consist of all the original members, they still find a way to entertain us with their European style metal. Guitarist Geoff Gayer, drummer Dean Roberts and vocalist Mike Olivieri were the only returning members (although Geoff has recently left the group).
New World Asylum is a re-mastered version of World Asylum which was the record previous to this release. The major difference between the albums would be the vocalist. Mike Olivieri made his return to the band for New World Asylum whereas World Asylum featured Wade Black (formerly of Crimson Glory).
Basically, the album is full of face-melting solos that would make even the great Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom) envious. The vocals are superb, nothing at all I could possibly say to bring them down. The bass guitar and drums are riveting and complete the band, like my guitar teacher always used to say, the bass and drums are the cake while guitar and vocals are just the icing. Leatherwolf must be one pretty tasty pastry! [ END ]
