Bears of the Sea (2008)

Loud noodling over jazzy drums is the opposite of how I would describe November 5, 1955. They have a sound like no other, sort of a concoction of hardcore music with some hardcore drinking. Their unique song writing truly intrigues me, most of the guitar riffs don’t seem to fit together just quite right. However, the originality of the song structures keep the music fresh and different.

November 5, 1955 has been around for roughly four years; in that time they have been working their asses off to bring to us their debut album Bears of the Sea. This full length album is quite an accomplishment for the traditional quad-package band, everyone in the music business who knew of them expected an album sometime fairly soon due to the heavy hitter line-up; the band consists of past and present members of Sluts, Burn Your Wishes, and Pictures of Gabriel.

“Paint Yourself Out” starts out with a Michael Jackson style drum introduction but breaks into some of the odd sounding guitar riffs that November 5, 1955 are well known for. In all honesty, the vocals – of this song only – make me wish that I had selective hearing. A mild headache came rushing to me as soon as his voice traveled from my speakers to my eardrums. Not a very impressive song.

Every other track on the album is outstanding, it was only “Paint Yourself Out” that I really was not fond of. All in all this an album worth listening to. This is a band you should keep your eyes and ears out for in the near future. Trust me, you’ll be able to hear them coming.  [ END ]
