NoMBe – ‘Noah’ [EP] [Album Review]
Without any sharp edges and effervescing with feel-good surfaces, ‘Noah’ showcases NoMBe’s effortless, ever-evolving sound.
Noah, NoMBe’s new EP, shares a leitmotif across its six tracks: breezy soundscapes, unrestrained energy, and sunny melodies.
NoMBe explains, “All of the songs had this ‘driving’ feeling. I intentionally refer to it as a ‘Road Trip Album.’ All of these songs work well when you’re driving a car, and it’s almost like a playlist you’d make for the ride.”
Raised in Germany and based in Los Angeles, NoMBe’s music falls under the umbrella of indie-pop, but even that term doesn’t fit his sound, which is singular and resists categorization. In 2018, he introduced himself with the release of They Might’ve Even Loved Me, followed by 2021’s Chromatopia. Along with nearly one billion streams, his music has been featured on Shameless, Ozark, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, The Resident, Ballers, and Kylie Jenner’s Life of Kylie.
High points on Noah include the opening track, “Space For Two,” riding a catchy rhythm and a bright melody with elusive hints of reggae. There’s a bop feel to the track that makes it an earworm.
“White Lies,” featuring Max Frost, is a personal favorite because of its pushing beat and bouncy sensation, especially on the chorus. While “Boys Like Me” reveals a wonderful sonic balance between the mid and top lines, with the rhythm extended just right.
Talking about the song, NoMBe says, “I’m telling a woman, ‘Don’t fall in love with boys like me.’ I’m going to fuck this up, so save yourself!”
The EP finishes with a pensive, poetic track, “Last Day of The End Of The World,” a retro-flavored folk song suffused with soft, warm energy and low-slung radiant harmonies A delightful gentle texture to NoMBe’s voice gives the tune a graceful allure.
Without any sharp edges and effervescing with feel-good surfaces, Noah showcases NoMBe’s effortless, ever-evolving sound.
