Helen Townsend Premieres Her Nature-Loving “Melbourne Streets” Music Video
Singer-songwriter Helen Townsend takes you for a glimpse into her Australian roots with the premiere of her “Melbourne Streets” music video.
When you listen to Helen Townsend’s latest single, “Melbourne Streets,” and you see its accompanying video, you’ll probably think that the song is just as picturesque as the clip. This is a real deep dive into Townsend’s life and her roots, featuring beautiful imagery of the Western Australia coastline.
The imagery found within the video is meant to be a manifestation of the song’s themes: solitude, resilience, and the rejuvenating abilities of nature. In pairing the song with this video, Townsend is amplifying the story through music, offering you a more direct look at her artistic vision. The “Melbourne Streets” video is actually part of a musical min-series she has been releasing with her partner Shannon Smith. This represents the fifth clip in the series.
Discussing the creative process behind the song and the video, Townsend states:
“‘Melbourne Streets’ was recorded across three different studios including Compass Records in Nashville where we added the soulful layer of background vocals with the McCrary Sisters. I knew then that I had to shift the direction of what would have been a more folk-country tune to make it what it is today. This song was like layering a painting, with every stroke, the picture became clearer. The background vocals made me feel larger (somehow) and so it seemed fitting to shoot the video clip in the vast open spaces of Western Australia’s coastline where space is plenty, and soul searching is a given.”
If you’re new to Helen Townsend, then “Melbourne Streets” will serve as a fitting introduction to who she is. Hailing from Walyalup/Perth, her music examines the complexities of everyday life. She has a distinctive style and an evocative lyrical approach that feels like classic Americana. There is an obvious influence of Nashville’s legendary music scene within the song, with a friendly sentiment and very inviting rhythms and textures. It’s one of those songs that reminds us that even if it feels like it’s only raining on you, there is always sun and beauty breaking through. Townsend writes songs very much for herself. This is something she emphasizes within “Melbourne Streets” when she says, “New guitar to hide my shame, Writing songs to ease my pain.”
When you’re ready to pack up your things, seek solace in escapism, and seek something new, Helen Townsend will have your back. She knows how you feel, and she can relate. Which is obvious in her articulate, inspired songwriting.
