My Violence Premieres Their Dreamy Music Video for “Unicorn Girls”
Musician Silvia Ryder, under her moniker My Violence, is redefining herself with the premiere of the music video for “Unicorn Girls.”
With distinction, subtlety, and finesse, Silvia Ryder is redefining herself with her new recording project, My Violence. Today, we help unveil the music video for “Unicorn Girls,” off of the debut, self-titled My Violence album. The release of the song comes in the lead-up to the proper release of the album on October 6th.
“Unicorn Girls” is the third in a trilogy of videos prepared by Ryder, following up “Harlot” and “20,000 Dashboard Angels.” The video clips are intended to depict fleeting vignettes of debauchery, pandemonium, and a celestial love affair. They are certainly much broader and more expansive than your typical casual performance video.
With a few words, Ryder tells us:
“The video for ‘Unicorn Girls’ is based off Marc Kehoe’s short film Destroy All Blondes. It is a visual patchwork of promiscuous escape and catharsis with sanguine slivers of hope.”
Ryder may be a familiar name and face from her time with indie dream-pop act Sugarplum Fairies. This remains a dreamy kind of sound for the Austrian vocalist, but it’s a somewhat darker, more fleshed-out sound. She took an interesting approach to recording this album, committing to a certain realm of sound that included a self-imposed ban on guitars. She wanted it to be an exploration of distinctive soundscapes, the types of sounds you generate with synthesizers. In fact, there was one synthesizer in particular that Ryder relied on, The Omnichord, a cult favourite synth.
As an artist, Ryder has no time for categorizations; she is merely interested in achieving her artistic goals. As you hear on “Unicorn Girls,” there are new sounds, old sounds, and probably sounds you’ve never heard before. Real or imaginary, genuine or abstract, Silvia Ryder can succeed at it all, and that’s why she is an artist worth keeping a close eye and ear on.
