Quite frankly, “Venom” is a genre-defining track in the modern metalcore scene. With its haunting atmosphere, soaring chorus, and crushing emotional climax of a breakdown, In Shallows have perfectly balanced melody and destruction throughout its entirety. Wearing their influences on their sleeve, it’s easy to pick out hints of Motionless In White in the vocal delivery, as well as the instrumental prowess of bands like Currents. Not only does “Venom” scratch the head-bangers itch, but it also retains an aspect of catchy accessibility for those new to the genre.
When discussing the release, In Shallows had this to say:
“Our standards have changed while creating new music to reflect our diversity and this is just the beginning. Brace yourself.”
While keeping their foundational sound established on previous singles, “Phantom Grace” and “Buried By Mistake,” they’re clearly breaking their own mould to become a force to be reckoned with. As the band said, brace yourself, because there’s plenty more on the horizon for this talented young band.
