Remain seems like quite a proper name for a band that has worked hard to endure and thrive. Today, the band revealed the music video for their latest single, “Season of Youth.” It’s their first single of the year and new music since signing with New York indie imprint A Diamond Heart Production late last year.

The band has been on a bit of a roll as of late. They finally solidified their lineup by late 2022 and began gaining the attention of several indie labels. Then came a spot on the South by Southwest lineup in 2023, which helped reveal them to be one of America’s top unsigned acts.

“Season of Youth” is a defining track for this current incarnation of Remain. It’s a rootsy-sounding alternative rock song that would appeal to fans of rock, country, folk, or even pop.

Discussing the song, Remain lead singer runs down for us the whole story behind the writing of “Season of Youth:”

“‘Season of Youth’ was written on a Saturday morning after eating breakfast at the Seven Mile Café in Denton, Texas. It is one of the only songs I’ve ever written while the sun was up. I had a Saturday off, so my wife and I decided to go out for breakfast. We were almost seven years into marriage, living in a one-room apartment, and our first child was a few months from being born.

“I’d struggled (and failed) for years trying to build a band and make a living playing music. The goal was simple—do something I enjoyed for a living. But here I was over 30, with an expanding family, having to work two jobs that I didn’t like to provide. She was excited about the future, but my excitement was overshadowed by the disappointment of where I’d ended up because of my failed dreams, and the fear that my family would suffer because I’d chased a dream over a career.

“At the café, there was music in the background and an upbeat song came on the playlist. The mood and rhythm of the song felt good and uplifting. By the time we arrived home, I picked up my guitar and began playing chord progressions in a double-time rhythm.

“At some point that morning I sang the words ‘Season of Youth’ and the rest of the song followed. The song just kind of happened. By midday, I had an upbeat yet reflective song about coming to terms with the loss of youth, failed dreams, the reality of where one has ended up, and the redemptive notion that who you’re with in life is more important than where you are.

“Remain is a five-piece band. We are just five guys that play instruments and that’s all you hear on the recording, our instruments and our voices. Even though we are not making dance music with synths and software, I wanted to write something with a dance rhythm and gear it towards what we do. I wanted to write dance song with serious content and play it with my band. The rhythm is dance, but the content is visceral–seasons change and life goes on. That sounds sad, but the song suggests going together and experiencing those seasons with someone else. I think that’s worth dancing to.”

It will be ten years this summer since the official formation of Remain. Since then, they have worked hard to pay their dues and develop as a unit. In the fall of 2015, they recorded their debut EP, The World Beyond, in their hometown of Denton. By early the following year, they got local radio airplay, which spread to international markets like the UK, Europe, and Australia. The band continued to build success through the next few years, but by 2019, it was time for a shakeup. They underwent some lineup changes, which resulted in them redefining the sound and direction of the band. Most of that year was focused on raising money for recording, writing, rehearsing, and building chemistry. By the end of that year, Remain had completed their debut full-length Millennial Nation.

The current members feel really good about where the band is at right now. And you’ll see and hear more of why when they drop a new album soon.
