Gun is a band that has had a long and storied career since getting signed in 1988. As a group they have been through numerous members with some moving between roles within the band. After splitting in 1997, the nails appeared to be in the coffin for the widely popular band, however, to the immense joy of their fans the group reformed in 2007.

In 2010, bassist Dante Gizzi made the bold move from bass to lead vocals and finalised the current era of the band (although they would still endure line-up changes).

Tonight (February 29, 2024), though, was to be a look forward for the band and celebrate their upcoming ninth studio album release, Hombres (read more about the album here). There was no support; it was to be a short, sweet set and an event for the true fans as those who attended not only got to see Gun in the intimacy on London’s 100 Club but also a copy of Hombres on white vinyl, which, for music fans old and young, is quite a gift in a time when physical media is more for the collectors.

Gun opened their set with one of Hombres new tracks, “Lucky Guy” a song that isn’t yet fully available nevertheless, the fans in attendance welcomed the new material with glee. Accompanied by three outstanding backup singers, Guns sound was outstanding, and the additional singers added a depth to proceedings that many other live shows could benefit from.

To ensure the night didn’t just showcase new material, Gun provided fans with a selection of tunes from across their many albums, including “Here’s Where I Am,” “All Fired Up,” and “Steal Your Fire,” to name a few. Of course, there was a healthy inclusion of new material, including “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Take Me Back Home,” and “Falling.”

Some of the new songs had already been released into the public domain and Gun’s die-hard followers had wasted no time learning the lyrics to these new tracks singing along at every opportunity.

As the twelve-song set came to its conclusion with “Shame,” both Gun and their hardcore fans were having the time of their life subsequently Gun gave in willingly to chants of “more, more” from the audience, announcing that this next song was not on the setlist, so had not been planned. “Ladies and gentlemen, sing with us,” declared Gizzi, “Inside Out,” a tune from 2022’s previous record, The Calton Songs. It was a well-played, yet unplanned end to the show with Gizzi and the crowd sharing vocal duties throughout the chorus.

As concerts go, this was most definitely on the shorter side. However, on this occasion, it did not subtract from the show or even the value of the ticket price. It was intimate, Gun-fixated and a fan-focused show that delivered. Tonight demonstrated that less, can really mean more!
