“You ready?” were the first words we heard at House of Blues, Boston, as Joe P announced his presence on stage. He launched into his set, head bobbing and hair flowing wildly. Joe P and his band members wore bright colors, baggy cardigans, and even a sweatband.

This is one of those really strong artists who sounds exactly like he does on record. While he switches up his voice or the instrumentals slightly during his songs, he does an excellent job of letting his authentic self shine through on stage. Not only was he high-energy, but the crowd, even those who did not know his music in advance, was bouncing to the beat.

Joe P closed out with his hit, “Off My Mind,” but did so by starting it out in an acoustic variation. My favorite part of his set was during this last song when he took three steps back and belted the song loud enough for the microphone to pick up his voice still. My jaw quite literally dropped. Joe P is certainly deserving of a full tour of his own—and I look forward to when that comes.

The crew quickly set up the Cold War Kids and were ready to go. Each member of the band walked onstage in the most casual outfits—as if they reached into their drawers and picked what was on top that day. I loved that aspect of their attention to the music rather than their looks.

I can certainly say I did not know what the Cold War Kids looked like before seeing them; however, based on their sound, I had assumed them to be around Joe P’s age. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the sound they have developed was coming from a group that looked like they are my dad’s age!

This group is incredibly high energy and their crowd is obsessed with them. Every corner of the room and each level of the venue was filled with people singing and dancing along to the music.

They played many of their best hits but also included a good portion of songs from their newest self-titled album. My personal favorites were, of course, their classic song, “First,” but also “Who’s Gonna Love Me Now” and “Louder Than Ever.” Overall, both artists performed at their best and gave all of us an outstanding show!
