D. Park Premieres the Music Video for His Cover of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September”
Singer-songwriter D. Park debuts the music video for “September,” his remake of the legendary track by the just as legendary classic funk and soul group Earth, Wind & Fire.
Ambition sits firmly in the driver’s seat when it comes to the mind of singer-songwriter D. Park. That’s well demonstrated with his brand new music video for “September,” a remake of the legendary track by the just as legendary classic funk and soul group Earth, Wind & Fire.
Originally released in 1978, this was one of the career-defining moments for the Chicago ensemble, and in his own creative, novel way, Park has remade it to fit within his songwriting style while remaining true to the heart and soul of what made the original so definitive. It’s a brave move by Park to take a classic song very much rooted within its genre and the time it was written and reinvent it into more of a toned-down, electro-pop funk song.
Discussing “September” and his point of view on covering it, Park comments:
“There are maybe three songs that will always put a smile on my face and a sway in my hips; they’re like an instant shot of happiness, any time, any place. The most important one, of course, is ‘September’ by Earth, Wind & Fire. It really feels like an impossible song to cover, because how could you ever make it any better than it already is? Regardless, a friend had put the idea in my head to try and cover it, and I had so much fun making this updated feeling version of it. Just as dancy and fun as the original, but with a fresh set of sounds. I think it feels like a modern adaptation of the original.”
“September” is part of a more significant and ambitious, recently undertaken by Park, resulting in his new EP, Carbon Copies. Officially released today, Carbon Copies, as the title implies, is a collection of six cover songs that he selected, stripped down, reconstructed, and gave a whole new identity to. Other artists’ songs you will discover on the EP include some of the most well-known hits from The Beatles, Billie Eilish, Drake, and Taylor Swift. While others may be hesitant or intimidated by such a tall task, Park found creative freedom in taking songs that so many people know and love and doing something wholly new and unexpected with them.
With such a diverse and elite set of artists, Park does a very capable job of keeping things cohesive and not letting the hearts of these songs get away from him. Some of what he’s accomplished with Carbon Copies is to illustrate that these are very much sturdy and durable hits and not just meant to be heard in one specific fashion. These are songs that sound not just like the hits they once were but hits that firmly belong on any summer 2023 playlist.
