Ethel & The Chordtones Express Raw, Bluesy Emotion with Their “Make You Mine” Lyric Video [Premiere]
Ethel & The Chordtones are bringing some old-time vibes with the lyric video for their song “Make You Mine.” The track has a real ‘60s feel and sound to it with its bluesy, psychedelic atmosphere, punctuated by some of the old black & white footage you’ll see in the video. When commenting on “Make You Mine,” vocalist Julie Hardy emphasized the emotion and accessibility to the track.
“The inspiration behind ‘Make You Mine’ was to capture that uncontrollable desire we all have felt at some point in our lives and put it into a song. We wanted to write something that’s universal and speaks to our audience and beyond. We recorded in our studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Brooklyn supplies the edge to our style. It’s a gritty, somewhat dark, intense place to live and we think you can hear it in this song; both the intensity of the emotion and the organic raw approach to the production.”
If you’re making an educated guess that Ethel & The Chordtones hail from New York City just by the sound of “Make You Mine,” well you’d be correct. Formed in Brooklyn about five years ago, Ethel & The Chordtones are actually a duo, made up of the aforementioned Julie Hardy and guitarist and producer Mike MacAllister. Hardy’s roots are firmly situated in jazz and blues, while MacAllister has branched out into various musical genres, even gaining a reputation as a producer for electronic music artists. His early days were spent playing in garage rock bands which aligns better musically with the sound of Ethel & The Chordtones.
Their 2015 EP Trouble was quickly met with praise and success with the title track even featuring Ryan Levine, singer for the highly successful L.A. indie rock group Wilding. The song was also used in the trailer for Entourage The Movie, while Trouble’s second single “Serious Craving” appearing in Diet Coke, Lexus, and Haagen Daz ads.
