Talking Musical Influences with British Blues Rock Guitarist JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR
With the release of her sixth album, Reckless Heart, and subsequent UK tour dates looming, we spoke to British blues rock guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor about some of the great musicians that have helped shape her sound.
British singer and guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor releases her sixth album, Reckless Heart, on 15th March 2019 (, the same date her UK tour kicks off at the O2 Academy in Liverpool. Discovered by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics at the age of 16, we talked to Joanne about the guitarists who helped shape her sound.
Check out Joanne give her guitar some “Bad Love”:
1. Stevie Ray Vaughan – “Little Wing”
– Stevie is the reason I began playing guitar. He’s in my opinion the perfect modern day blues player, great tone, flawless technique and buckets of personality all wrapped in a charismatic frontman with an amazing voice and great arsenal of blues songs.
2. Paul Kossoff – “The Hunter”
– One of the most underrated guitarists ever. Such great tone and absolutely killer vibrato. Absolutely one of a kind, such a terrible shame we lost him so young.
3. Albert Collins – “Avalanche”
– There’s just no one else like The Ice Man Albert Collins. An incredibly distinctive and unusual playing style and so funky.
4. Jeff Beck – “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”
– Jeff Beck is probably my favourite guitar player. There’s just no one else like him. Such a unique way of playing and so innovative.
5. Freddie King – “Burgler”
– Freddie is my favourite of the 3 Kings. Such a bad ass guitar player, there’s just no one as funky as Freddie.
To show her appreciation of the music that inspired her whilst she was in the studio, Joanne has done a Spotify playlist. From Howlin’ Wolf through Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples to Bonnie Raitt, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Free to Gary Clark Jnr and Amy Winehouse you can check out the Playlist here.
