Crowbar (w/ Boss Keloid) @ Academy 3 (Manchester, UK) on March 19, 2017 [Photos & Show Review]
New Orleans sludge masters Crowbar shook Manchester to its core the earlier this month. Our photographer survived to bring back these awesome shots…
The sludge metal scene owes a lot to New Orleans and the bands that have emerged from there since the 80’s and chief among those groups is the Kirk Windstein powered riff machine Crowbar. With twenty-seven years and eleven studio albums, the most recent being 2016’s The Serpent Only Lies (E1 Music), under their belt, it’s fair to say that their status as sludge metal influencers is well earned. But they aren’t ones to rest on their laurels as March sees them kick off what can only be described as a punishing tour of 30 shows in 30 days that will see them trek across the UK, Europe and Russia and that won’t be the end as they will return to Europe in May for another 10 shows. To paraphrase a title from their second record, all they have, they will give!
Providing support for the Manchester show were Wigan’s own psychedelic sludge peddlers Boss Keloid. Critical acclaim for their second album, Herb Your Enthusiasm, and an electrifying live show have made them a staple diet of the UK metal scene and their run of good fortune shows no sign of stopping. Well worth your time and ears if you haven’t heard them yet.
