Orchid – “Sign of the Witch” [EP] [Album Review]
The bass riff spirals down like a cyclone, the drums change the tempo to and upbeat and each guitar plays the same solo. Simple elements to songs like that make a huge difference. It’s the little things that count.
In the scene of Sabbath-style doom metal/rock, Orchid are veterans. They’ve been around since 2006 and have been dropping quality releases ever since. They groove, they doom, and they’ve written some of the best doom metal to date. Their new 4 song EP, Sign of the Witch, is yet another release with the signature Orchid vibe that fans of the band will love.
Orchid’s sound is recognizable right away; not just their style of playing, but also their production. Which quickly brings me to my only complaint about this EP (and the band as a whole) – everything is so similar that it’s hard to discern from which album different songs are taken. I realise fans like when groups retain the same sound, but change is good!
Orchid kind of gets a pass for this, but newer bands need to stop trying to sound exactly like the first 4 Black Sabbath albums. That being said, there are points during Orchid’s discography where it feels as if they ripped off something Tony Iommi wrote. Regardless of this, at least the band does it right! Bone-chilling riffs make their way through this EP and Orchid knows exactly what they want to sound like, and pull it off with flying colors.
