Rival Cult – “KILLS” [EP] [Album Review]

Rival Cult don’t claim to be anything other than noisy-ass rock and, as their new EP demonstrates, they’re bang on the money with that description.

I went into reviewing this with almost no information on this band except that they’re from Austria, they’ve been around for all of six months, and they describe the sound on their debut EP Kills as “double-fired rock”… whatever the hell that is meant to be?

Well, just over ten minutes later the six songs that make up the Kills EP have finished and I have to admit that I’m not really left any the wiser. I can say for certain that Rival Cult are noisy bastards and they definitely don’t believe in messing about. A rough, ragged, raucous affair, the likes of “Deadwomb” flies by in a screech of thrashy, speed metal riffs and gobbed out vocals. It’s all a bit chaotic, so much so that, even when they rein it in for a bit, you’re too busy catching your breath to notice.

If I’m being honest, I feel like a bit of a twat marking this down because, not only are the band still finding their feet, but KILLS also doesn’t claim to be anything it isn’t and, at the end of the day, the band are giving it away for free over on their Bandcamp page. So, if you like noisy-ass rock, what is there to complain about?

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
