Album Review
Odium – “Burning The Bridges To Nowhere”
Hey kids, don’t judge people just by the way they dress. The same principle could be applied to Odium’s latest album Burning The Bridges To Nowhere: behind its “so so” cover artwork lies a very enjoyable blend of modern pseudo Melodic, Thrash, Death, Hard and Groove Metal (and more) waiting to be discovered. This Canadian quintet seems very determined to demonstrate with their sophomore recording, that they deserve to be taken seriously by all audiences. Surely, there’s no reinvention of the wheel here and comparisons with well-known, more seasoned outfits like God Forbid and In Flames will seem logical. Despite all this however, Odium posses very distinctive and strong melodic leanings, catchy riffing and undeniable prowess on the performing front – especially with the clean/growl vocal trade-off and the tight rhythm section.

There is still plenty of room to improve and many bridges to burn and detach from in the originality department, but cuts like the thrashy “Viral By Nature”, “Within the Distraction” and the title track, perfectly blend with the more expansive sound of “No Way Out” and the melancholic quasi-ballad “The Descent” among others to deliver a decently solid piece of modern Metal. These guys are definitely on the right track! Again, don’t judge people just by their appearance; as it happened with this album, there are probably many interesting things beneath the surface you may be pleased to discover.
